How to Prepare For Your Driving Test

Depending on your age, to be eligible to take the driving test in Pennsylvania a driver must follow a 5 or 6-step process:

  1. Acquire a PA Driver’s Manuel
  2. Take a physical examination and complete Form DL-180
  3. Visit a licensing center with Form DL-180, proof of identity, two proofs of residency (not required for 16- or 17-year-olds), your Social Security card, and a check or money order payable to PennDOT
  4. Acquire your initial Learner’s Permit by passing an eye screening and knowledge test
  5. If under 18, complete 65-hours of supervised driving
  6. Schedule the driving test

For many drivers, especially younger drivers, this process might seem intimidating. At Driven2Drive, a professional driving school, we believe success is determined by a driver’s ability to confidently perform behind the wheel. The key is preparedness. To engender confidence, we urge all drivers to learn the traffic laws and guidelines and to diligently practice driving skills.

Before taking your Learner’s Permit test, study the PA Driver’s Manuel. Learn the laws and driving guidelines. Instead of memorizing facts, try to truly understand the laws and guidelines; for each, ask yourself: What is the purpose? Learning the purpose of the laws or guidelines will give you the confidence to pass your permit—and to begin driving.

Regardless of your age, before taking your driving test, practice your skills with a knowledgeable adult driver or driving instructor from a driving school like Driven2Drive. Drivers under 18 are required to complete 65-hours of supervised driving for a reason: Practice makes perfect.
